Buyer Advice Needed SW20 3SGTE MR2

Postby FANGIN » Mon Nov 30, 2009 2:44 pm

Tonight my flatmate is looking at a 3SGTE powered SW20 targa top. Done 180xxx kms

What are the common faults to look for on these?
Will be looking for the obvious but is there anything we should be especially looking for?

Cheers guys

Coolant related issues: rust in cooling system (crunchy hoses), overheating, water in oil (milky oil), which brings to another common problem:
Oil related issues: sludge (black plastic like build up under rocker cover), run bearings and oil leaks which brings to another problem:
Blown turbo seals.

Ran bearings and blown head gasket from result of neglect (first from running low on oil, second from running on water or old coolant).

Whatever you do, don't buy a pre facelift.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

And the reason for that would be?

Which year did the facelift model come out?

a completely better designed head
Better cams on both intake and exhaust
better turbo
better injectors
different ECU
Map sensored
better exhaust manifold
better sump
better oil filter location
Revised PCV
Better oil pump IIRC (Or was it waterpump?)
better headgasket
better a million other bits.

the list goes on.......

it would be late 93 / 94 and newer for post facefilt.

Some people don't really care about these little bits and pieces of better things, but if I can choose again, I'd go for a facelift.

you forgot to add that the owners usually want more than your arm and leg and some more for the facelift ones

1992+ would be my choice. Got all the goodies except the engine changes and only costs a finger

Oh and one more thing, being targa top... many people tend to sell them again when winter comes. You do the maths.

The 92 has none of the goodies I've mentioned.

They want an arm and a leg for the facelift for a reason. Because they are that much better if you don't plan to go "all out" and " I'm gonna replace everything with aftermarket parts anyway.".

Safest bet: Just don't get one. They're a pain when things go wrong :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Exactly, wish I bought a sweet 180SX instead...... at least I won't kill my back everytime I worked on it.

And your stomach when you stand on a chair to lean down into the engine bay, that wedge is nice looking and all but it kills me.

Wimps

Try bench pressing the gearbox about 10 times because you don't have a proper alignment tool for your twinplate clutch. Must admit I got pretty good at it, only took one attempt and about 30secs to see if I'd got the splines aligned correctly.

You didn't follow the golden rule: Everything is an engine out job :P

Nah, that would've made the job harder. Gearbox is an easy one to do on it's own, I just complicated it by fitting a twin plate clutch. ;)

Cheers for the info guys, was a pre facelift, I ended up not going with him to get it, but gave him a heads up. I thought they would be a bit quicker than what they are.
