2001 Toyota Corolla GL

Hey guys Just got a mate interested in this make of car

Wants to know what they go like?> how much power they make etc?

I have seen a very sporty looking one around town once, full body kit etc, is this a special model or something?

General thoughts about them, the engine handling etc?

Reliable? (Dumb question maybe)

I would answer him myself but I dont know sweet FA about this type of Toyota.

The body kit one will either be aftermarket, or an option. Toyota did offer a kit for theses and I think they sold some with it prefitted.

Chassis wise pretty much the same as other ae101/111 variants. So shocks and springs etc easy to find. Handle the same as other corollas, ie excellent once you sort the wheel alignment

No not excess stock. still sold the ae111/2s new here in 2001.
NZ and other export markets got the zze's from 2001/2ish onwards. So it would one of the last ones.

Like me he comes from a performance background but is just wanting to grow up abit I guess, does it have enough power to pass safely on the open road? get up to 130-140 ok?

I have a friend who bought a 4afe ae111 wagon.

Given its a smaller engine but it was the wrong car for him... he drives like a maniac and gets annoyed when the corolla wont go round corners at break neck speeds.

Unless its a bzr model i personally doubt the handling will be up to par for him, the top end power is probably lacking at high speed but warwick etc will be able to comment better about that

sorry to steal the thread but what did the sport models of that shape (link in the first post) come out with is it just a blacktop? i have seen one floating round gisborne always wondered what it had.

mum had a courtesy car it was one of those corollas (in the first post) and auto i dont know what motor it had but it was painfully gutless cant have been a 7a maybe a 5a?

NZ new never got blacktop (I dont think) Think they were just 7A with a nice kit and sporty interior.

They are plenty fast enough for a day to day car.
But if you are used to say a turbo MR2 for overtaking, well of course this will seem slow...
I have a 2000 NZ 4AFE wagon and it's fine for long trips etc, a 7afe one would be mint! I have TEIN springs and monroe shocks. Handles fine except the front shock's seem to be valved to be soft at speed which ruins it.

Passing safely is a driver thing, not a car thing But they go fine int he 80-120kmh range.

Basically, reliability: hard to find better, wheel bearings are the one to watch, any HINT of noise do them, as they like to ruin the hubs if they are left too long and that makes it dearer.

If the guy's looking for a sportyish corolla he'd do a lot better with the zze then. The 'Z' spec ones go very nicely.

And surely for that money you could easily pick up a zz powered generation corolla. I just picked up a 2002 NZ new corolla wagon for 7.5k,
And here is a link for a 2zzge one with 6 speed on TM for 11k, which is the same amount they want for the older generation corolla. I know what i would pick.

Thing is with corollas you pay extra because of their (deserving) reputation
