20v silvertop wont idle

Postby h8wrxs » Sun Jan 02, 2011 10:46 pm

im having problems with my 20v silvertop 4age

i went to fit a new aftermarket intake plenum to it tonight and got it all bolted up

the problem is there is 2 air lines/vacuum lines coming out of the bottom of the stock one that my aftermarket one doesnt

i was told when i bought it neither was important and didnt need to be re-tapped into the new one

but now my car doesnt idle at all, with a screwdriver in the airflow meter holding the flap open it runs but not without it

does anyone know what these lines do/are for? ive tried blocking them etc and nothing gets it running?

i can put up pics if anyone wants me to

any help would be much appreciated

the little hose may be for the power steering idle up (not sure). but the big one is for the idle control solenoid so they need to be plumbed back into the intake after the air flow meter for it to be happy

but why would they not run off atmospheric air if it will inside the stock plenum?

i ws thinking of just putting a little air filter on the big hose but tht didnt work?

the problem is that it is sucking air without it passing through the air flow meter so the ecu is not giving the motor enough fuel. basically a vaccum leak. you could get away with it on a blacktop 20v because it has a map sensor not an afm.

just bung them in the intake pipe going from the afm to your new plenum and it will work fine.

is it possible to convert a silvertop from an airflow meter to a map sensor?

you can remove the airflow meter by either fitting an after market ECU or fitting the engine loom, ECU and map sensor from the 20v blacktop motor.

there was a post recently on the blacktop ecu swap with some info on pinouts which will help if you go down that path. http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=81282

Just fix the leak

A vacuum leak on a MAP sensor engine will give issues just as it will on an AFM engine, though with AFM you get the idle issues moreso.
