Has this fuel gone bad?

Postby cat007 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 12:28 pm

It's been sitting in the tank for over a year and has gone a very yellow/orange colour. Here's a pic:

Looks like some one peed in your fuel tank! 8O

If it has changed colour that significantly I would say it is very bad. Fuel only lasts around 6 months at best I think, even worse for av gas

Yeah I think it's a bit naffed. Probably the main reason the supra won't start. Initially thought it was the injectors not getting power, fixed that. Then the fuel pump wasn't working when cranking, fixed that. Now hopefully this bad fuel is the last of the problems. Then I should be good to go for some launch control burnouts in the drive hehe

It pays to pull out the injectors and put couple of drops of acetone on the tips, if you think injectors don't fire because of gunked up fuel in them...

I'd say 98 goes off faster than avgas, well looses it's quality anyway.

but rare to find some gas that has got to the point it wont start the car.

The rarity here would be the fuel is over a year old lol

Might have to pull them out. I can't get the car to run with fresh fuel and new plugs. It fires a couple of times after about 7-8 seconds of cranking, then nothing for another 5-10 seconds.

I did manage to get it to run for about 10-15 seconds, it was running pretty rough, but it idled, then as I tried to rev it a little, it coughed and spluttered and backfired with black smoke, then died.

I don't have any acetone, what else could I use to give the injectors a clean?

you can buy acetone from hardware store (mitre10, bunnings, placemakers).

Sweet - will do that.

Soak just the tips or apply power to them and pure some through?

you could buy a syringe and force it through with power on but it is very dodgy: 1) sparks + acetone = fire 2) low impedance injectors do not work well with 12V 3) acetone destroys o-rings (outside of the injectors).

yep.

You could also drip into the injector (rail end).

Might put a small hole in some duct tape, and place over the top, that should help any getting onto the o-ring

Cheers

Ok so I thought I'd see if I could get it going again, see if getting some heat into everything would help...

Well it took a while but eventually it coughed into life. Although the strange thing is, it will either crank and crank coughing and firing once every 10 or so seconds, or it will crank for 1-2 seconds and idle....

I've checked the ignition timing and it seems fine. Cam timing, well, I haven't looked, but the last time it started the engine it was running fine...

Once warmish I gave it a few revs and if I abruptly open the throttle anything more than 10% it misses and backfires through the exhaust. I can rev it high in the rev range (ran it up to 5,000rpm) and it's fine as long as I only barely open the throttle....

Does this sound like gummed up injectors? I'm a little confused...

edit: Also sometimes when initially cranking, it tries to fire against the starter, but only at the start

You get that when ignition timing is too far advanced.
