pros nd cons of runing a oil cooler on a 4age?
was thinking about puting one one my road car nd wanted to know if others hav done this? and what they thought about it?

not really needed on a road car, but if you do put one on make sure you use an oil thermostat in the system.

My 4ag turbo with no oil cooler doesn't get above 98 degrees c at the drag strip.
And thats 2 hours, about 10 passes.
When and if, it reaches 100 degrees, ill probably start worrying.

Do you take it to the track at all? Sustained heavy use may make it get hotter. Or is it a dedicated strip car?

Well here in Townsville its just a drag strip.
And yea, there are maybe 5 mins between each run.

I have taken it to the go kart track.
But thats probably only 45-50 secs and you only do 2 laps at a time.
Probably reached 105 degrees which is still pretty safe i assume.

Pffff 98degrees. I was seeing 140degrees at Manfeild after just a few laps :oops:

On the street, lucky for the car to get above 110degrees.

I run one on mine... But i had MAJOR heat issues, now its sweet as.
Dropped core temps by 10-15 degrees

i see a oil cooler as just a bit of insurance. run with a thermostat and you can't go wrong really. especially when 4ages are susceptible to run bearings so easily, you don't want your oil thinning out much.

as mark said 140deg is what you get at the track or if you are giving it a good thrash.

On the street it would never get that hot as it requires you to be reving the car to redline over and over again = not really something you should be doing :wink:

Riding in BZR4age's Levin I noticed that his oil temp wouldn't get above 80degrees on the street with just normal driving (has a thermostat). On the circuit no doubt it's a good idea, but if just comuting all you are going to do is keep the oil on the cold side.

Part of the blame for me running my bearings at mainfield. If you're going to put it on a track, put an oil cooler on it.

yep, make sure you run a thermostat, because you dont want it taking forever getting to temperature either.

depends how you drive it on the street. in can think of a few occasions where redline has been seen for extended periods of time where i think my oil cooler would have definately helped! :wink:

I'm sure if it was needed, it would have come with it standard. If you're just looking to throw some coin around though, then i'm sure it will soak some up for ya. Save it for ya 3s :wink:

Heh, and they would have designed the oil system to be more than 3.3 litres with filter!

Some AW11's come with oil coolers from factory, cant be such a bad idea if your oil does get a bit hot.

Under 100 deg is a good rule of thumb for everyday driving. Up to
120 deg when racing is kind of acceptable, but anything over 120 deg
should be considered too hot. The temperature at the bearins will be
quite a bit higher than the circulating oil temp, so at 140 deg your
bearings are not going to stay happy for long !! My $ 0.02 worth

The max i've ever seen with my oil cooler setup was 120C running around pukekohe.

i dont run one on the rally car, but been seriously thinking about it lately.. i dont have an oil temp gauge. If i did id probably be worrying more :lol:

Wheres the best place to get all the bits i would need, filter adaptors etc?

wouldn't oil grades make a noticeable difference?
though i cant see how modding up a aw11 cooler would be too hard
