Changing farm vehicle licence type to passanger car type

Postby sergei » Tue Mar 08, 2011 10:17 pm

What is involved in changing licence type (rego),
I have set my eyes on a Landcruiser that is registered as farm vehicle, which needs a lot of love, but I don't want to go through the whole compliance processes just to get it on the road again...

Just a matter of filling out a form & paying the appropriate licensing fee. You'll also need to have a current WOF before you are able to change it to Class 1.

Sweet, I will check if the rego is alive (although the owner told me it does not expire).

Would be there any problems if say I chuck a D-plate on it and drive it from Tauranga to Auckland "for repairs"?

I managed to get from New Plymouth to Wgtn on a D Plate (no WoF or Reg) & passed a number of marked patrol cars on the way, none of them gave it a second look. Perhaps its the luck of the draw

Nope, we took a Merc on D plates from Hams to Welly for a funeral few years back, even went through booze bus and speeding ticket, cop asked us where we were from and where going etc, didn't seem to fussed.

There was an incident on motorway patrol where a guy got stung on a D plate and the cop said he needed an authority/peice of paper saying he's allowed to drive it on D plate and where to/purpose etc, which true but bullshit. If the cops having a bad day he'll do you for it, if he's a GC he'll tur na blind eye.

Obviously you can't abuse it, like my GF's mate used a D plate to test his Starlet from TGA to Waihi, $&#$% idiot got stung. But if it's a genuine reason such as getting it legal/test drive/ etc, cops are sweet.

Yeah wasnt entirely sure on that, had heard it from a dealer before though.

If you read the link above, that incident is actually correct ;)

So are you going to do a project thread? 40 series?

it is 60 series, high roof, square lights.
If I get it I will definitely do a project thread.

On side note: how difficult is to separate cab from chassis if it is possible at all? I am thinking of getting chassis powder coated.

Undo bolts and get 20 mates to help you lift it.....
Be very very sure it is actually still in the system, have seen the farm reg story before where they actually had on Exempt A instead of B. I believe the rego can still expire on Exempt B too if not exempted, just takes two years instead of 1. Call up NZTA or go on Carjam and be positive it is still live.
