3SGTE TRD Headgaskets

Have a TRD gasket in my corona, been in there for abut 3000km and its blowen, did get hot twice like 110deg but other than that iv been nice to it

Ran no more than 16psi boost and usually 10psi

How much shit can these gaskets take? whats the better choice?

Detonation will still break them. Block and head machined up nicely before installation?

Started to ping once apon a time, got it sorted asap with new pump.

Had head checked and both head and block skim'd

Dunno about the quality, but nzgaskets does a MLS gasket for 3sgte. STA lists it for $70 incl GST. S2099SSJ

I would expect a TRD gasket to take more.
Cant really retorque as you do it to a setting then 90deg more of a turn...
Toyota told me to do it to it to the same torque settings as standard
Everything perfectly smooth and clean
Suplied lube on new bolts

If you are concerned about the headgasket blowing fit ARp headstuds. With the exchange rate at present can't be much more than $200.

It is not recommended to overtorque any 3S headbolts unless you like pulling the corner off the block... :lol:

Studs would be an advantage? Thaught they were mainly for stopping the threads in the block from wearing out. etc

i used ARP studs and a factory ST205 gasket on my build, no issues.
ARP's are the key i think in a performance build

Gasket seems to be much less critical than the clamping force. Plenty of people run standard gaskets with big power for long periods of time using uprated head bolts/studs.

Almost certainly going to be poo bolts at fault. Are 3SGTE bolts torque to yield?

Thinking of getting a Cometic head gasket

Try STA out by airport, they do cometic and list 1.5 and 2mm thickness and will prob be cheaper.

Or $270 will get you full gen3 3sgte TGP gaskets, including MLS head gasket.

Used new head bolts, cant rember the brand but was decent from memory

Gen 3 gaskets are different... but can be used?

Recomend a 1.5 or 2.0mm head gasket?

Gne 3 head gasket is fine to use on gen 2 block, and lots of other seal and gaskets are the same, but several are different (rocker cover, oil pump and rear main seal) so you'd need to buy those seperately.

Turbo gaskets are expensive to buy seperately (>$200 for TGP turbo gasket set for gen 2) so a full toyota set is good price.

Yes they are, as that is where the extra 90deg comes into play. You set it to the manufacturers torque spec, then crank 90 degrees (and another 90 in my case)

To the OP...If sticking with bolts, I wouldnt be using no name brand, just get toyota oem TTY, or splash out on the ARP studs

The TRD head gasket is the same as was used by TTE for the WRC celicas so they can handle just a bit of power :)
