Bluetop Rod Bolts

Postby kiwi4agze » Fri Oct 07, 2011 11:09 am

I am going to be rebuilding a Bluetop 4age to go into one of my employee's AE-82 FX-GT. I have been told to use small block chevy bolts as they can withstand a lot of abuse.. what ones should I order???

Stock ones or Aftermarket ones?

ARP probably do a rod bolt for them. Probably overkill unless its gonna be pulling 9000rpm all day or running a lot of boost

The last engine failed due to rod bolt failure... i suspect.

every 4age or gze that I have ever seen personally that has thrown a rod had been apart and the old rod bolts re-used.
I have bought about 2 or 3 engines now with thrown rods and found the undone rod bolt nuts in the sump.

They are one part that I personally would never re-use.
I have used new genuine toyota ones in a race engine I built a few years back and never had a problem, but not sure on the TGP price now.
If it is anything like the 20V headstud prices they have probably skyrocketed and are now bugger all cheaper than ARP.

For piece of mind considering the price, should get ARP.

If he's on a very tight budget why is he building a motor?
No point doing it half arsed on the cheap and have it shit itself a while later.

Fair enough but the point still stands, you don't want to have play around with things like this if you want a reliable motor.

Undone or broken? Sheared off slightly undone, after pounding from a cooked/seized journal? Sounds like undone is an assembly problem not a bolt strength/quality/shoulda replaced with new one problem.
Thanks.

It's just a case of reading the service manual, as always.
If the job's done properly, it won't fall apart.

if he is a super tight budget, buy a second hand motor of TM for like $300, then start this thread again in 2 months when it craps out.

yep, it's one of those things, if you're on a budget, you can't afford not to do it correctly.
