If you were to repower one of these 86, what would peoples choice be?

Would a beams 3sge fit into one? They're a fairly tall motor... What would it do to the balance of the car

Would probably break before you got to use the handling anyway.

Sorry I'm a loyal Toyota man and was thinking what Toyota set up would be best.
Did you also know that a 3sge Beams also has a bore and stroke of 86mm, which goes nicely with the 86 them.

Then you wouldn't want a rebadged Subaru anyway

I think it would have to be a flat engine just so you don't upset balance of the thing.

What is balance?
When a roll cage goes in, interior gets removed, fat driver inserts himself at lowest seating position. I have had a measure up and would say the cylinder head is the only part higher than the flat boxer engine. 20kg weight higher by 200mm is this really going to upset the characteristics that much. As soon as a roll cage goes in surely that must count for a comprise of weight vs handling.

Saw a TRD one at BP in Welly (taranaki st) this morning, brakes looked suitably impressive in person.

That was me 😃. Say hi next time and you'd be welcome to have a closer look.

Today was a better experience than last Thursday there. Hit the curb by the pump hard and popped the front right tyre! Bugger!

Hmmm, remove 200hp boxer motor, install cast iron block 200hp beams motor.. cost = lots, resale value halved, NVH would be worse, higher COG & higher mass =more weight transfer = handling fail.

As soon as a roll cage goes in surely that must count for a comprise of weight vs handling.

A rollcage done right stiffens up the chassis a huge amount, this improves handling. But a rollcage's primary purpose is adding safety/survivability.

Still +1 for the 2ZZ, how many people here have actually driven the 86 and will say they like the engine.... :) (except those that own it) lol

TBH I dont mind the stock motor (though i own a 20v so most cars feel fast  ). While the car may not feel fast speed does actually get up pretty quickly.
And aroind town they seem pretty peppy without having to rev it or give it full throttle.
