The wires I seem to be missing are the ones called G1, G2 and NE.
They're just not there at all

These wires should be shielded (as single bundle). So generally you wou be missing a single "wire". Without them your car would not start at all.

Thats exactly my point. It shouldn't.

They're not plugged into the ecu, the plug or even to be found at all. And the car has been running for at least two years like this?

I'll get some photos later in the week if possible. One of the other plugs has a distributor signal though, surely this wouldn't be enough to make up for that though? I mean, that is there from factory too

Distributor signal IS G1/G2/NE.

haha, I know. Which is why I can't understand how its running at all.
I'll have to take some photos as proof. And then never touch the ecu ever again in case I upset it and it never goes again.

On a related note, how do the gen 2 plugs work? They're slightly different to the gen 3 ones so I'm having trouble getting the pins out

The G1/G2/NE signal will be coming of the distributor. It will be 4 pin plug. just trace those wires. The shielding stops ~10cm before the ecu.

I have done something slightly different.
I replugged ST165 loom for ST185 ECU (which is same/similar as Gen1/2 SW20). The way I did it is I went to pick-a-part and chopped off random Camry/Corolla plugs and connected the ends. The pins in my case were different so I could not re-use ST165 pins in new plugs.

Hows that 165 coming along Serg? Wouldn't mind seeing it again in a later stage

Not going anywhere.
I am at stage where I need to buy a lot of things like seats, coilovers, halfcage, ST205 i/c radiator, i/c pump, injector resistor, get oil cooler sorted (more $$$ fittings), retune and cert.
Having STI does not help as it is a very nice car to drive ;).

Yeah, seems I may be missing that plug may be absent entirely.
Ok, I'll have a look down there next weekend or so - thinking I've upset the injector 1 wire by trying to get the pin out of the plug which is the leading suspicion why the car is missing on one.

Right, have the car up and running properly again, still on the gen 2 ecu though.

Still wanting to go to a new ecu to get the most out of the engine, so thinking I've got two options, a adapter loom from the gen 2 wiring to the gen 3, or to go fully aftermarket.

Anyone know if one can get the 26, 16 and 22 pin plug sockets? I have the four plugs that would go on the gen 3 ecu end.

Or, what aftermarket options do I have? Bear in mind its a na engine, but I plan on keeping it pretty much forever. Older G series link? Plug and play?
