How does one damage a tyre like this? LARGE pics

Post by Elmo »

The top pic is the inside edge of one tyre, the inside of the bead.

The second is the outside of another tyre, same damage as the first to the inside also.

The tyres are 33 inch 4x4 tyre, so yes, a little more difficult to handle than the average tyre, but the tyre shop (yes, this was done professionally) had the equipment to deal with this size tyre, and no worse than low profile tyres as these have MUCH more flex.

I bought 4 new tyres through them, at a cost of $1440, so they werent trying to get any payback on me for not spending any money with them.

The tyres all had 4-5 mm of tread left, and would sell as a set for about 200-250.

Ive emailed the company with these pics + 1 showing the tread left. Im awaiting there responce, Im just looking for opinions (well facts) on HOW they could possibly do this to the INSIDE of a bead.

Wonder if there was a sharp edge or chip out of their tyre lever? That could tear it like that if the bar didn't slide freely as the rim turned on machine.

Edit: by lever i mean the foot thing on the machine.

I guess this is possible as they try to pull the tyre OVER the rim, but Im guessing it picked up because they didnt have the lower bead in the well of the rim so it put extra pressure on the foot pulling the top bead over.

As above, damaged going on or off. They should have lube going on, and 4x4 tyres should be easier than most to put on without damaging them. Coming off they'd have been dry though. Whoever was doing the job would have noticed it happen.

Looks just like the damage you get when you drive on a flat tyre.

Yeah definitly not. Even with 8psi in these tyres they still look like they have 30 in them. And theyve never been below 10psi for extended periods (dropped for off road use)

thats definitely not from driving on a flat, not even close

the first time i put a 17" tire on a rim myself i did exactly this to it and f**ked it beyond repair and i learnt from it

it was the foot thing on the tire machine that ripped/pinched/caught it when i did it

Yep ya get that (tyre machine) when you either have no idea what you're doing and sometimes when pulling off a real old shitty dry tyre.

I've have the work experience kid do that when putting one on and I've had damage like that when removing very old perished/dry tyres.

Sounds like a very reasonable thing to do. Glad it was a good outcome.
