I thought the beauty of the 2JZ is that it IS possible to be pulling big numbers on a stock-ish engine?

Switching cams isn't what I'd call "opening the engine up", so thats not an issue, and the net is filled with articles on internally stock (bar cams) 2JZ's putting out big numbers.

My vote - Don't stuff around with the ute idea. Find yourself an already built chassis, minue engine and box, and use that. You might even get lucky and find a ute built for the purpose up for sale. That way you get the benefits of a car which has already had teething issues sorted, and you're likely to get it for around 1/3 of the actual build cost.

Our drag car here at work has so far cost approx $40K, and its aiming for an 8 next time it goes out. And thats a dirty horrible 20B, I'd say the 2JZ would be about the same to pull numbers out of. Drag racing doesn't have to be ridiculously expensive if you do it intelligently, and have a clear goal from the outset. Not "12's or maybe 9's" - aim for a target, and build the car to achieve it.

Say you coax 600hp out of the engine - which to be honest isn't that extreme an ask for the 2J - and put it into a chassis weighing under 1000kgs, bam - there's your 10 second pass without breaking a sweat. The numbers are easy to work - its just the $$ numbers coming out of your wallet that will hold things back. Talk to as many ACTUAL experts as you can, and if you're genuinely serious then they'll help you out.

thanks for your comments, they arnt gonna do the ute now i think cause its gonna cost to much, im not sure. I was just tryna get ideas.

No offence here but I think that if you need to come on to a forum to find out that a project like this is going to cost you too much and that a stock tranny aint going to do it etc. you really shouldn't be attempting a project like this at all.... :?

AFAIK you can get a half cage certified for road use but not a full cage unless it's a bolt on cage which you can unbolt as the sidebeams will not be safe to have in case of a crash.

By that I mean it will make it harder for the driver/passenger to exit the car the that in place so they deem it to not be roadworthy.

even if the cage followed MSNZ details and the car was used twice for MSNZ permitted events?

i heard somewhere that they're proposing running one type of cage that can be used for drag/track/rally, as there are getting more multi purpose cars now? like evo's, etc, that can run very quick on drag, then few changes, and out on circuit. anyone heard anything about this?

the cages for circuit and rally are already the same specs as both are governed by MSNZ. in fact, a Group N rally car and a production racing are essentially the same vehicles with different tyres and suspension settings. likewise a regional rally car and a Super GT/ Sports Saloon.

er ... well my job is homologating race / rally cars ... and I know nothing of this "they" you are speaking of. So that'd be a no.

Well, its a damn good idea for it to be looked into. As some have mentioned, there's a few cars floating about which while being circuit or drag cars primarily, are quite capable of performing in the other arena.
