20v Trumpet Question

Postby Caribeena » Fri Jul 27, 2007 11:39 pm

Tried a search but didn't come up with any answers,

When people have taken their plenums off on a 20v and run open trumpets, what has been done with the vacuum pipes running off the factory plenum and also the air intake temp sensor?

Im not planning on doing this anytime soon, but am just curios

cheers

I was using open throttles with aftermarket trumpets. Just put the sensor next to the inlet of the trumpets. For the vacuum lines, I just put a little filter on them.
I was going to put in a bonnet scoop at some stage as well, so it had a cold air feed rather than sucking the hot air form the engine bay. Ended up selling my BZ-G before I could be bothered though.
This was on a Blacktop, you can't do that with a Silvertop if using the stock computer, due to needing the AFM.

I got my ones off Trademe. They were 70mm long. They weren't the best though, as they didn't quite have the same size as the mating surface on the throttles, so they probably weren't the best for outright flow.
If you're going to amke your own though, you'll be sweet. I'd say to make them around 70mm to 100mm long.

Yeha just unbolt box and old trumpets and chuck the new ones on.
As for making out of 50mm pipe, no no no!
Trumpets need to be tapered and have a bell mouth at the end to be fully effective, otherwise you'd probably be better off just using the original trumpets. You'll be going backwards in power with straight 50mm pipe.

Measure the throttle opening with the trumpet off and that's the size you'll need to taper down too.

Before I got my aftermarket trumpets, I had the original ones on it, withour the intake box and some socks filters on them. That sounds insane. I love the sound of open individual throttles.

needs a bit of a clean and the zipties are even special ones where they have a tab to release them so you can use them again.

Don't know how true it is, but a lot of places I have read on the internet say that filter socks over individual trumpets mess up the airflow entering the trumpet, and recommend a fully enclosed filter. As to get max flow and undisrupted flow a trumpet needs about 15-20mm between the bell end and any air filter.

I don't have trumpets on my 45mm carbs yet, but got an itg foam air filter for so that I can fit a trumpets at a later stage.

The filter socks I used to use had internal springs so the end of the filter sits around 50mm from the end of the trumpet, never had any issues.

Here's mine. No dyno plots or anything.
I think it would have been better having them in a big single box with a filter on the top and my bonnet scoop feeding it. I sold the car before getting any of this done though.

most of the air is drawn in from the sides not the top. thats the problem.

Interesting stuff.

Dad's building my new intake off what he learnt with the V8SC guys.

a lot of the air actually comes from behind the trumpet,
flow around the side and into the trumpet so they need to stick out into the box a wee way.

Wouldn't have thought that myself but.........?

Millions of people, millions of idea's......
